Last-Minute Meta: Shrouded Fable at Worlds

Shrouded Fable is shaping up to be an exciting set for competitive players, featuring a range of powerful and highly playable cards. Its release timing is particularly significant, as it will be legal for use in the Pokémon World Championships, scheduled for August 16-18, 2024.

This means players will have a short window to incorporate these new cards into their strategies before the biggest tournament of the year. And, there are certainly some cards to consider – here’s a brief look at some of the highlights of Shrouded Fable.

Shrouded Fable Card Review

Nightly Stretcher

Nightly Stretcher (Item) – Effect: “Put a Pokémon or a Basic Energy Card from your discard pile into your hand”

Nightly Stretcher is a versatile recovery card that can fit into various deck archetypes. Its ability to retrieve either a Pokémon or a Basic Energy provides flexibility in resource management. This card is particularly valuable for:

  • Recovery-focused decks
  • Stage 2 evolution decks, allowing players to reclaim crucial combo pieces
  • Decks that rely on specific Pokémon or Energy types

The card’s utility makes it a strong candidate for inclusion in many competitive decks, potentially as a one-of tech card.

Fezandipiti EX

Fezandipiti ex (Pokémon)Ability: Take Advantage “Once during your turn, if any of your Pokémon were Knocked Out during your opponent’s last turn, you may draw 3 cards. You can’t use more than 1 Take Advantage Ability each turn”

Fezandipiti ex’s ability is reminiscent of Oricorio-GX from Cosmic Eclipse, which saw frequent play. As a Basic Pokémon, it’s easily searchable and can provide valuable card draw in aggressive deck archetypes. The ability helps maintain momentum after losing a Pokémon, potentially turning a disadvantage into an opportunity for a comeback.

Dusclops & Dusknoir

Dusclops & Dusknoir (Evolution line)Ability: Cursed Bomb “Once during your turn, you may put 13 damage counters on 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon. If you placed any damage counters in this way, this Pokémon is Knocked Out.”

This evolution line introduces a powerful damage placement effect. Dusknoir can place up to 13 damage counters, while Dusclops can place 5. This ability allows players to force their opponent to take a Prize card, but at the cost of losing Dusknoir. The strategy has potential synergy with current decks and can be a game-changing play, especially against multi-Prize Pokémon. It offers a significant tempo swing that could turn the tide of a match.

Kyurem

Kyurem (Pokémon) – Ability: Anti-Plasma “If your opponent has a card with Colress in its name in their discard pile, the attack cost of this Pokémon’s Trifrost is one colourless instead”

Attack: Trifrost “Discard all Energy attached to this Pokémon. This attack does 110 damage to 3 of your opponent’s Pokémon.”

Kyurem serves as a direct counter to the popular Colress archetype. Its Anti-Plasma ability significantly reduces the energy cost for its Trifrost attack when facing Colress-based decks. Trifrost’s ability to hit multiple Pokémon for substantial damage makes it an excellent tool for taking out Basic Pokémon or spreading damage across the board. This card provides a strategic option against certain meta decks and has potential synergy with energy acceleration or recycling strategies to mitigate the energy discard cost.

Something for the Collectors…

As the follow-up to Twilight Masquerade, Shrouded Fable marks the 9th set in the Scarlet & Violet series. It’s classified as a special set, which comes with some unique characteristics:

  • The set will feature over 95 cards in total.
  • As a smaller, special set, individual booster packs won’t be officially sold separately.
  • Traditional booster boxes will not be available.

An intriguing aspect of Shrouded Fable’s release is the departure from the usual product line-up. Notably, there will only be one blister pack product for this set, featuring a promo card of the Pokémon Pecharunt. This is a significant change from the typical release strategy, which usually includes at least three different blister pack trio products.

The Special Illustration Collections - Kingdra ex, Greninja ex and Kingambit!

Each box also includes two additional foil cards featuring the pre-evolved forms of the headline Pokémon. For the Kingdra ex collection, you’ll find beautifully rendered foil versions of Horsea and Seadra, while the Greninja ex box offers Froakie and Frogadier.

What Shrouded Fable lacks in blister pack variety, it more than makes up for with its collection boxes. These products are generating considerable excitement in the Pokémon TCG community, and for good reason. At the heart of each collection is a stunning special illustration rare-style promo card showcasing either Kingdra ex, Greninja ex & Kingambit.

Two of the boxes come with the inclusion of five Scarlet & Violet—Shrouded Fable booster packs, while the Kingambit collection box comes with four.

Greninja is of course a fan-favorite. The card itself is an alternate artwork of a previously printed Greninja ex card that was nothing special in terms of the TCG game. I doubt collectors will mind, however!

Chase Cards for Collectors

Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipitithe Loyal Three! – Illustration rares that were originally featured within the Mask of Change Japanese set, but cut from the English version – Twilight Masquerade. We expect these to be included within Shrouded Fable, as the set is very much themed around them.

A Ghostly Gang...

Next, a creepy sequential set of illustration rares – Duskull, Dusclops & Dusknoir – art by James Turner.

James Turner is of course a Pokémon graphic designer for the video games. Designer for Pokémon such as; Tatsugiri, Galarian Zigzagoon and the Gigantamax Pikachu – or the Chonkachu, as it is lovingly named!

Full Art Trainer Cards

Last to show off, are some of the full art supporter cards – and the special illustration Cassiopeia!
