The TCG Roadmap: How the New Megas Will Be Released

So, when can we expect to see these new Mega Evolutions TCG cards in our booster packs? To understand where we’re going, we first need to see the established pattern. English Pokémon TCG sets are typically a combination of two or three Japanese releases.

We’ve already seen this with our first English Mega Evolution set, which brought together cards from Japan’s foundational Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia sets. The upcoming English set, Phantasmal Flames, will continue this trend, featuring cards from Japan’s fiery Mega Inferno X expansion. Based on this, we can make some speculative predictions about the future:

  • Confirmed – Japan’s Mega Dream ex (November 2025): The first of the new Megas to debut in the TCG will be Mega Dragonite ex, the star of Japan’s annual premium High Class Pack. This set will also introduce a brand-new “Mega Attack Rare” (MA) rarity.
  • The Rumour Mill – Storm Emeralda (Early 2026): Strong rumours and store listings point to the next main Japanese set featuring Mega Zygarde ex, a perfect fit for the Kalos-themed Legends: Z-A.

This roadmap means we can likely expect to see the Mega Dragonite cards in our main English set in early 2026, with the Mega Zygarde cards following in a mid-2026 release.

A New Way to Battle: The Rules of Mega Evolution ex

The return of this mechanic isn’t just a reprint; the new Mega Evolutions TCG cards come with a significant rules update that changes how they play.

  • High Risk, High Reward: When a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex is knocked out, it gives up three Prize cards.
  • Faster Evolution: Megas now evolve from their final pre-evolution (e.g., Dragonair evolves directly into Mega Dragonite ex). You no longer need the fully evolved form on the bench first.
