The Return of Box Toppers? The Enhanced Booster Display Box
The Enhanced Booster Display Box offers a unique bonus compared to the other standard version booster boxes of previous sets:
- Includes a special illustration rare-style promo card featuring N’s Reshiram with the Journey Together logo
- Still contains 36 booster packs
- The Enhanced box is priced exactly the same of previous booster boxes of scarlet & Violet sets.
- This new product may signal the return of box toppers to the Pokémon TCG
What are Box Toppers?
Remember those awesome bonus cards you used to find inside booster boxes? Those were called “box toppers,” and they’re making a possible comeback with Journey Together! First introduced way back in 2002 with the Legendary Collection set by Wizards of the Coast, box toppers were special, larger-than-usual cards included as a bonus for buying a full booster box. They were highly sought after due to their unique designs and limited availability.
The Journey Together official reveal has introduced a new product: the Enhanced Booster Display Box. This special box includes a unique, special illustration rare-style promo card featuring N’s Reshiram with the Journey Together logo, alongside the standard 36 booster packs. This inclusion has sparked speculation among collectors: could this be the return of the beloved box topper?
While not explicitly stated, the presence of this special promo card certainly hints at a return to this exciting feature. If this is the case, it could be a fantastic incentive for collectors to pick up a booster box of Journey Together. Keep an eye on WLC for more updates as we get closer to release!
The inclusion of box toppers in Pokémon TCG sets ceased after the release of EX Holon Phantoms in 2006. Which, incidentally, we have a binder full of Ruby & Sapphire & Holon Phantoms singles at our store in Westwood Business Park – should you be interested. Since then, some booster boxes have included figurines instead of special cards
Behind the Scenes: Journey Together's Development
The Journey Together official reveal also brought some interesting insights into the set’s development. This expansion pulls content from two main Japanese releases: SV9 Battle Partners (released in Japan on January 24, 2025) and the ex Starter Deck Generations (released in Japan in November 2024).
- SV9 Battle Partners features around 100 main set cards and at least 28 secret rares, with a focus on Trainer Pokémon like Iono, Lillie, N, and Hop.
- Approximately 50 cards from the ex Starter Deck Generations will also be included in Journey Together, featuring Pokémon like Amoonguss ex, Blaziken ex, and Mimikyu ex. Some cards from this Japanese set, such as Pikachu ex, Tyranitar ex, and Lugia ex, have already appeared in the Prismatic Evolutions set.
This combination of sources contributes to Journey Together‘s impressive total of over 180 cards, including more than 40 Trainer Pokémon and 16 Pokémon ex. It’s also worth noting that Journey Together marks a significant milestone for the Pokémon TCG, as it will be the first set printed in Latin American Spanish, bringing the total number of languages to 16!
