Released on February 9, 2011, Call of Legends marked the culmination of the HeartGold & SoulSilver era, leaving an indelible mark on the Pokémon TCG. This 106-card expansion (95 base set cards plus 11 “SL” Shiny Legendary cards) shone a spotlight on the legendary Pokémon of that era. Of course, the 11 “SL” cards consisting of; Raikou, Entei, and Suicune (The Legendary Beasts), Lugia and Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza (The Weather Trio), Deoxys, Dialga and Palkia

A Set Forged in Legend

Call of Legends is synonymous with one thing: Shiny Legendary Pokémon. While the set celebrated the power and mystique of Legendary Pokémon, its true legacy lies in the introduction of these incredibly rare and visually stunning alternate colorations. These “Shiny” variants instantly captured the imagination of collectors, igniting a fervent hunt that continues to this day.

Though Call of Legends featured some reprints from previous HG/SS sets, it served as a capstone for the HeartGold & SoulSilver era, paving the way for the Black & White era

(and if you’re looking to explore that era, be sure to check out our stock of Black & White boosters from sets like Plasma Freeze, Boundaries Crossed, and Noble Victories! – at our store in Westwood Business Park, Thanet, Kent).

The desire to pull these elusive Shiny Legendaries has made Call of Legends one of the most sought-after sets in Pokémon TCG history – with the “SL” 11 commanding a high-price on the secondary market!

Card Types & Features

Call of Legends presented collectors with a diverse range of cards:

  • Rare Holo Cards: The first 22 cards of the set featured a stunning holographic treatment, adding a layer of visual appeal and collectability.
  • Shiny Legendary Pokémon (“SL” Cards): These 11 cards represent the pinnacle of rarity within the set. Featuring alternate colour palettes for iconic Legendary Pokémon, these cards are among the most valuable and sought-after in the entire expansion.
  • Lost Zone Effects: This new gameplay mechanic introduced a strategic element by removing cards from play entirely, creating unique deck-building and gameplay dynamics.

Notable Cards & Their Value:

While the entire set holds value for collectors, certain cards stand out as particularly desirable – and no surprises for which they are!

Shiny Lugia (SL7), Rayquaza (SL10), Groudon (SL4), Ho-Oh (SL5), and Kyogre (SL6) and Shiny Entei (SL3) are highly sought-after, commanding significant prices in the secondary market. For instance, A PSA 10 graded Shiny Lugia recently sold for over £6,000, illustrating the high value placed on these pristine examples.

The Lost Zone Mechanic: A Game Changer

The Lost Zone introduced a unique layer of strategy to the Pokémon TCG. Unlike the discard pile, cards sent to the Lost Zone are permanently removed from the game. This mechanic, featured on cards like the Stadium card “Lost World” and the Pokémon “Mime Jr.,” – both featured in Call of Legends – added a new dimension to gameplay, forcing players to carefully consider the consequences of using these powerful effects.

The Lost Zone mechanic has appeared in various forms throughout the history of the Pokémon TCG:

Early Appearances – The Lost Zone was first introduced in the Platinum set, released in February 2009, where cards such as Giratina LV.X and Palkia and Dialga G LV. X utilised this mechanic.

Recent Revival – Recently, the Lost Zone mechanic made a significant comeback in the Lost Origin set, released in 2022. Naturally, the set featured Giratina heavily, so the Lost Zone mechanic was doubtless to make a comeback:

  • Giratina VSTAR: This powerful Pokémon can use its “Star Requiem” VSTAR Power to knock out the opponent’s Active Pokémon if the player has ten or more cards in their Lost Zone
  • Comfey: This Pokémon’s ability allows players to look at the top two cards of their deck, keep one, and send the other to the Lost Zone, helping to quickly accumulate cards in the Lost Zone
  • Mirage Gate: An Item card that allows players to attach two basic Energy cards from their deck to their Pokémon if they have seven or more cards in the Lost Zone
  • Colress’s Experiment: A Supporter card that lets players look at the top five cards of their deck, put three in their hand, and two in the Lost Zone

Promotional Cards & Special Releases

Call of Legends was further enhanced by several promotional releases:

  • Black Star Promos: Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee were released as Black Star Promos with a unique Cracked Ice Holofoil pattern.
  • Pokémon Evolutions Box: This box featured either the Blastoise or Torterra evolutionary line and a booster pack from the HeartGold & SoulSilver series or Call of Legends.
  • Three Pack Blisters: These blisters included either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan as a promotional card, two Call of Legends booster packs, a HeartGold & SoulSilver booster pack, and a Dialga or Palkia coin.

The Distinctive Energy Cards

Energy are other an afterthought and a boring addition in modern Pokémon TCG sets. However, Both the HeartGold & SoulSilver and Call of Legends sets featured unique energy card designs. Each energy type featured a silhouette of a Pokémon and a relevant location in the background. Call of Legends took this a step further by exclusively featuring these energies as Reverse Holofoils, making them especially valuable. Some examples include the highly sought-after Psychic Energy (Call of Legends 92/95) and Darkness Energy (Call of Legends 94/95).
