What is Warhammer?

At its heart, Warhammer spans two distinct realms:
- Warhammer Age of Sigmar: A high fantasy setting of magical realms, powerful heroes, and monstrous battles.
- Warhammer 40,000 (40K): A grim, dark future where humanity wages desperate wars against aliens, machines, and daemonic foes in a galaxy of unrelenting conflict.
Both universes offer their own unique gameplay experiences, factions, and rich lore to explore.

Elevate Your Hobby: Building, Priming, and Painting Techniques
Assembling and painting your miniatures is one of the most rewarding aspects of the Warhammer hobby. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced hobbyist, WLC has all the tools, paints, and advice you need to bring your models to life.
Building Your Models: A Quick Guide
Building miniatures is the first step in your Warhammer journey, and with the right tools and techniques, it’s a smooth and enjoyable process.
Clipping and Trimming:
- Use Citadel Fine Detail Cutters to carefully clip components from the sprue.
- Smooth edges and remove mold lines with a mold line remover tool or fine-grit hobby file.
Assembly and Gluing:
- Dry-fit pieces before gluing to ensure proper alignment.
- Use Citadel Plastic Glue for plastic miniatures; it fuses parts together for a strong, clean bond. For resin or metal models, opt for super glue instead.
Plan Ahead:
- If your model has complex parts, consider assembling it in sub-assemblies for easier painting later.
Priming Your Miniatures: The Foundation for Great Results
Before painting, priming your models is essential. Primer creates a smooth surface that paint adheres to and helps establish an even base coat.
Choosing a Primer: WLC stocks Citadel Spray Primers currently in black, (Chaos Black and White (Wraithbone). These are high-quality, easy-to-use sprays tailored to Warhammer models.
How to Prime:
- Place your models on a surface that allows 360-degree access (like a cardboard box or painting handle).
- Shake the can thoroughly for 1-2 minutes.
- Spray from about 6–12 inches away, using short, controlled bursts to avoid overloading the model.
- Allow the primer to dry completely (usually 30–60 minutes) before moving on to painting.
Tip: For a beginner-friendly approach, black primer is forgiving and helps with creating shadows, while white or grey primer works well for bright, vibrant colour schemes.
Painting Techniques and Tips
WLC offers a beginner range of Citadel Colour Paints, including the game-changing Contrast Paints and other specialised products that make painting both accessible for beginners and rewarding for experts. Here’s a general breakdown of the standard way to paint miniatures. Of course, it’s entirely up to you how you paint your models and there are many different techniques and styles to practice and learn:
- Basecoating – Start with Base Paints, which provide solid, opaque coverage for foundational layers. Popular options include Abaddon Black for shadows and Mephiston Red for striking accents.
- Contrast Paints for Beginners – Perfect for newcomers, Contrast Paints like Skeleton Horde or Blood Angels Red allow you to apply base colour, shading, and highlights in a single coat. They work best over light primers like white or grey.
- Layering for Details – Use Layer Paints like Calgar Blue or Evil Sunz Scarlet to build up vibrant highlights. These paints have a thinner consistency and are ideal for blending colours seamlessly.
- Shading with Washes – Citadel Shade Paints like Agrax Earthshade (brown) and Nuln Oil (black) are perfect for adding depth to your models. Apply them liberally, letting the wash settle into recesses to create natural shadows.
- Dry Brushing for Textures – Lightly dip a brush into Layer Paint or Dry Paint (like Necron Compound) and remove most of it on a paper towel. Gently brush over raised areas to highlight textures like fur, scales, and armour.
- Edge Highlighting for Precision – Use a fine-detail brush and Edge Paints like Stormhost Silver or Dorn Yellow to carefully highlight the edges of your model’s armour or weapons for a crisp, professional finish.
Tip: Thin your paints – at least the base/layer paints. Ideally you want a flowing consistency, not watery but somewhere in between. Some people suggest it should be the consistency of milk before you put paint to mini.
Tools and Brushes
Your choice of brushes and tools can make a big difference. At WLC, we stock high-quality Citadel brushes, designed for every level of detail:
- Base Brushes: Ideal for covering large areas quickly and evenly.
- Detail Brushes: Perfect for intricate highlights and small features.
- Dry Brushes: Designed for dry brushing techniques, with stiff bristles that pick up surface details.
